Truck Campers are the smallest segment in the RV world. That’s mainly because they have a particular use. First, because they piggyback on a pickup truck (often one with 4WD), they let the owner get off the beaten path. Second, with the RV on the truck, towing a boat, horse trailer, or other power sports machine behind the truck is not only possible but a key advantage to this type of camper.

A Quebec company, BBI Inc., in Sherbrooke, has fielded six truck campers that fit on the smallest to largest pickup trucks. The company says its design philosophy is innovative and leads to lighter vehicles, increased autonomy, more comfort, and optimized storage space.

Frankly, over the years, I’ve reviewed several brands of truck campers and found that most leaned towards ¾ and 1-ton trucks—some were for ½ tons, but until today, I don’t think I’d run across a unit meant for a compact truck.

The one I saw was mounted on a Ford Maverick, the popular new compact pickup.

The Lapah weighs 1,023 lb (465 kg) and has a floor width of 41 in (overall width 75 in) and a floor-length of 68 in (overall length 116 in). It can sleep up to two people.

Two single beds

The Lapah has two single beds, storage compartments for personal belongings and a foldable kitchenette. Its design maximizes interior space. Moreover, it includes dedicated space for a battery, a portable toilet and an electric cooler. Its roof can also accommodate a 200 W solar panel. The footprint is short, narrow and streamlined, and with its highly resistant fibre lining can follow you into the densest woods. Winter usage was a key feature of its design because it was built in Quebec. So, its insulation and heating system enables you to camp in all seasons, down to -35C.

Dual-pane, anti-frost windows on exterior.

BBI expects many of its customers to be outdoor enthusiasts who hunt and fish. To that end, they have included large, dual-pane, insulating anti-frost windows that allow you to enjoy a leisurely lunch or hot drink while keeping your eyes riveted on the landscape. For the fisherman, its lightweight and streamlined design makes it easy to access remote lakes.

However, perhaps the most meaningful marketing text is the following: “For the adventurer, it means peace of mind: a dry bed and heated shelter are ready for resting before hitting the road again.”

The Lapah has the essentials: space for your water tank, a heating unit, two comfortable beds, practical storage spaces and BBI urethane insulation that stands up to the cold. To enhance your experience, space is provided for a lithium battery of any size up to 400Ah, a portable toilet and an electric cooler. What’s more, the available 200W solar package extends your autonomy.
