Last month, I reviewed one of the newest Class C motorhomes. The Winnebago View is tapping into a market for long-distance travellers. To offer the best over-the-road experience, they have opted to use the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Chassis. This RWD platform features a 2.0L high-output turbodiesel, a 9-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and a 250-amp alternator. It’s also available with an optional 4WD version for getting off the beaten path. Its road manners are excellent. This is just one of the new breeds of Class C – all built on European-sourced van chassis, such as the Mercedes Benz Sprinter.
The overall takeaway from last month’s look was that a well-built, comfortable Class C on a chassis that drives well and doesn’t tax the driver is a viable option for those seeking many kilometers of adventure across our continent. That said, these motorhomes are priced accordingly. In this case, size is not directly related to cost. These smaller Class C’s cost more than several larger versions. That’s what I want to look at today.
Thor Motor Coach, a leader in Class C construction, has just released its 2025 line-up. I have selected three units – all of which use the Ford and Chevy domestic van and truck chassis to support these 2025 floorplans. Keep in mind as we go through these that this use of the Detroit builders’ options offers up savings of anywhere between 15 and 30% on MSRP.
Four Winds
One of the longest-running Class C builders – the Four Winds from Thor, uses the Ford E-Series chassis, while on some floor plans, they offer the Chevrolet chassis as an option.
One of the best-known drawbacks to these old-school chassis has been the ride. The units tended to wallow and roll – however, the foremost update from Thor this year is a new suspension that they call Smoothest™. This suspension system aims to tighten up that ride and make the unit more responsive and planted. While details of what they’ve done are not available (not now anyway), they say this is the same suspension system used in ambulances. That must be good, and it may go a long way to eliminating what has long been a systemic problem with these Detroit chassis.
Also new for 2025 are several floor plans that offer a comfortable Queen or full-size bed, a twin-to-King conversion bed, bunk beds, a fold-up full-size bed, or a convenient Queen-size Murphy bed conversion sofa. If you’re traveling with kids, they’ll love the cab-over bunk sleeping area, available in every Four Winds model.
Keeping up with tech – the Four Winds, and several other Thor brands, are equipped with a Touch N’ Go™ control panel. Only available on the Ford® E-Series chassis. This innovative system puts all essential controls on the dash radio screen, letting you monitor tank levels, manage the Automatic Generator Start (AGS), use the emergency start switch, and operate slide-outs effortlessly with Bluetooth® enabled devices. There’s also a mobile app that allows you to access these controls from outside the motorhome, right from your campsite.
Thor Omni
The regular Class Cs are built for families – or for two people – a motorhome experience without the cost of Class A. On the other hand, Thor also builds what they call Super C’s – still a C, but a much different animal with the ability to house and haul. For 2025 units such as the Omni are built on the Ford F-550 or F-600 truck chassis, (depending on the floor plan). These are 4×4 equipped and the Omni boasts a 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel engine with 330 hp and 950 lb-ft torque. These have keyless entry, cruise control, and remote start. Bring other vehicles or trailers along for the ride, thanks to the 10,000-lb or 12,000-lb trailer hitch, which varies on the layout.
Driver comfort and conveniences include automatic headlights, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, audible lane departure warning, and cruise control. During the long haul, this motorhome provides that much needed peace of mind.
These units also keep up with new tech. Standard on all Super C motorhomes, is the Winegard® ConnecT™ 5G system—an all-in-one WiFi extender, a 5G hotspot, and a TV antenna. Take advantage of faster streaming speeds to get the most watch time out of the Smart TVs in these diesel models. Along with big-screen TV’s the Super C’s get theater seating with footrests, heat, massage, USB charging ports, and cup holders.
Thor Echelon – (Canada Only model)
Aimed at the middle of the market is the Thor Echelon – size and capability make the Echelon good at so many things. It too is built on the Ford E-Series chassis while an optional Chevrolet chassis is used on select floor plans. This motorhome can tow up to 8,000 pounds with its trailer hitch. It also uses the SmoothTECH™ suspension system, as described above. Echelon’s maneuverability and power make it an ideal option for any adventure.
A nice upgrade is the 7-inch or 10-inch touchscreen dash radio, (depending on the chassis you choose Chevy Chassis Only: 7″ Touchscreen Dash Radio, with Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay & Sirius /XM Radio Ready. Keyless Entry Key Fob, Emergency Engine Start Switch.
The 10” screen is in the Ford only. It includes – 10″ Touchscreen Dash Stereo with Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay & Sirius /XM Radio Ready. Also displays the Touch N’ Go Control Panel: Tank Levels. Generator AGS, Emergency Start Switch, Slide out Controls, Keyless Entry Key Fob. It’s also a backup camera monitor. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It has a navigation feature as well. Reversing is a breeze with the backup monitor in every model that lets you check your surroundings, including any trailer connected to the 8,000-pound hitch. Plus, it has a convenient keyless entry system.
Available on most of the Thor products, as well as this Echelon motorhome, is a 100-watt solar charging system with a power controller, making them great for boondocking adventures. This powerful system safely charges the RV’s house batteries without overcharging or causing any damage, providing the energy you need to embrace nature without hookups.
Have a look at the full range of Thor Class C’s – many of which are economically priced – because of their continued use of the domestic chassis builders.
