I remember the first toy haulers coming into the market just over twenty years ago. At the time, they appeared as an answer to a need that RVers had been asking manufacturers for years. The fact is, RVers have always had toys, and the need to get them to where the trailer is parked is what spawned this segment.
Manufacturers didn’t need to convince buyers that this was a good idea – they already lived this life. It just wasn’t very convenient having to haul multiple trailers. When these first units appeared, they were quickly bought up by the off-road, race-related community, which already used these machines as a hobby and owned RVs. For others who saw the possibilities in having a living and garage space all in one, well, they are the ones who quickly made these trailers an instant hit.
Initially, they began with a loading door and garage space in a travel trailer (which was already a shell); they then quickly expanded to fifth wheels and motorized units, primarily Class Cs. Sizes quickly ramped up from small to well over 40 feet. Soon, the loading ramps morphed into suspended patios with bug screens, and the garage space doubled as a bedroom as fold-up coaches and suspended queen beds were added. Roof access also created a viewing platform for those race events. Many even carried an auxiliary gas tank so toys could be refueled at the campground.
Today, these units are as sophisticated as any on the market and feature special off-grid solar arrays, as well as extra water and propane capacities, making them self-sufficient for extended stays in the backcountry. Meanwhile, they provide a home and transport for whatever toy you love.
Here are three examples: a travel trailer, a fifth wheel, and a motorized unit. This is just a small sample of what is available today. One thing is for sure – if you have a toy – the RV industry has a way for you to haul it.
