There is a smaller RV builder in southern British Columbia that is selling trailers to RVers throughout North America in a rather unique way. Escape Trailers, in Chilliwack, BC, deals directly with customers – they don’t use the traditional sell-through-dealers method. Instead, they custom build each unit, working with the customer from first contact – through the build stage – till the unit is delivered. No dealers, interesting.

Escape’s comprehensive website will answer about 99% of any questions you may have about this process. It also has a good build and price feature. If you like what you’ve built along with the the price and you want to move ahead – at that point you can speak to them directly. You can do all this on your computer – no sales pressure. So, far I like this concept. However, if you’re like me, wanting to see, touch, and feel the product before buying it. That’s where working through websites falls short – and without dealers – well, I live in Ontario – not BC, 2000 miles away. You see the problem.

To address this common concern Escape Trailers came up with a community sourced solution. As of today, Escape has over 1,700 Escape Club members across North America. These owners have agreed to meet with prospective buyers and let them tour their personal units. With this many members, there is probably an owner near you. When you contact Escape, they will find a member near you and set up a visit. Probably the best part of this experience is having a chance to talk to the Club member and hear their real-life impressions of the product, the company and their take on the whole build and buy process, unvarnished opinions with no sales pitch.

As for delivery you can pick it up directly from their facilities in Chilliwack, BC or Jacksonville, Florida. If that doesn’t suit you, trailers can be delivered to your door by truck anywhere in North America.

Escape builds five trailer models in total including a fifth wheel version. This year they have introduced a new baby to the Escape family, the E13. This is the unit we will look at here. This travel trailer is just 13’8″ long, 6’7” wide with an inside height of 6’-1/2”. It has dry weight of 1,850 lb and a GVWR of 2,500 lbs. It can also sleep three.

According to the company web page the Escape E13 is described as “bringing back the charm of vintage travel with modern innovation. Lightweight, easy to tow, and built from a single seamless fiberglass shell, it’s the perfect blend of timeless design and everyday practicality. Compact, cozy, and ready for adventure – this is small-scale camping done right.”

Tow vehicle options for a trailer this size are many. In fact, there is currently a wave of new small truck introductions on the horizon – any of which would tow this trailer. As for SUVs, yes, they too (most of them) will easily tow this trailer with a 2,500lb GVWR. As an example, I am testing a new Toyota RAV4 this summer – its tow rating has been boosted to 3,500 lb in this newest generation. Frankly, I picture the two together as a driving combination as well as visually appealing. If small camping is something you’re interested in – have a look at Escape Trailers. By the way a Porta-Potty is available as an option.
