Tucked away along the shores of Lake Ontario, Prince Edward County—fondly known as ‘The County’—is a hidden gem that offers more than scenic beauty. It’s a haven for wine enthusiasts, art lovers, and adventure seekers.
Glenora Car Ferry
As we boarded the Glenora car ferry, the gentle hum of the engine, the sight of bald eagles soaring overhead, and the childhood home of the man who would be Canada’s first prime minister, nestled along the distant shore, whispering tales of Canada’s past, set the tone for our journey. It was as if we were being transported to a land where time slows down and every moment is savoured.
We would be dry camping for the next few nights at one-of-a-kind campsites. The ten-minute car ferry ride across the calm waters of the Bay of Quinte was a serene start to our adventure.

Discovering the Hidden Charms of Prince Edward County
Each morning, we ventured onto scenic drives, the roads winding through rolling hills and pastures. The vibrant barn quilts adorning the countryside are like pieces of a giant patchwork quilt, each telling a unique story of the community’s heritage and creative spirit, blending tradition with personal expression.
The early 18th century settlers from the US and central Europe painted Barn Quilts on an 8 ft x 8 ft board or directly onto the side of a barn. Today, various sizes are chosen based on available space. Each quilt, a unique piece of art, told its own story. The Barn Quilt paintings reflect the community’s artistic heritage
33 Vines Winery

The Entrance and BarnWine Bar at 33 Vines Winery
Our adventure began at 33 Vines, a quaint vineyard with a wine bar housed in an old barn. We parked our camper van beside rows of overgrown vines, the air filled with the fragrance of ripe grapes. That evening, we sipped wine in the rustic bar and listened to tales of winemaking from days gone by.
Bergeson Estate Winery
Next, we arrived at Bergeson Estate Winery and camped close to the vineyard and tasting house.

The views were breathtaking: In the distance, the waters of Lake Ontario meet the sky. Doug joined us at our table. “I am the keeper of all things green here at the Bergeson Estate,” he said by way of an introduction. We indulged in their signature wines and wood-fired pizzas, the flavours dancing on our palates. While listening to Doug explain the development of the wine-growing industry here in Prince Edward County over the past twenty-five years. The estate’s tranquillity enveloped us like a warm embrace as we learned about the careful growing, harvesting, and quality control processes that make their wines exceptional.

Casa Dea Winery
Our journey continued to Casa Dea Winery, where warmth and hospitality awaited us. We wandered through the vineyards, where markers show the vine’s grafted combinations marrying European elegance with Canadian resilience. Clean Oak Barrels are used worldwide in the wine aging process. Outside the barn that held the wine processing plant, oak barrels were lined up and ready for use in the aging process.

The setting sun cast a serene glow as we strolled around the vineyard, deepening our appreciation for the art of viticulture and the community spirit that defined Casa Dea. We stayed here for two nights, enabling a side trip to Black Prince Winery.

Black Prince Winery
Our final stop was Black Prince Winery, which has a rich winemaking history. Here, we met Curtis and his son Rhys, who shared captivating stories about their craft. The bold tastes of their wines and the innovative creation of craft vinegars speak of their forward-thinking approach, transforming byproducts into sought-after delicacies. “Our craft vinegar is a labour of love, transforming byproducts into culinary treasures that add a unique twist to any meal.” Said Curtis.
Their approach to bottling and marketing craft vinegar for the restaurant industry and private tables inspired us and added a new dimension to our journey. Rhys set up a display of the popular Black Prince Winery craft vinegar.
Rhys’s passion for the vinegar side of the winery business showed as he explained the process while his dad prepared tasting dishes with vinegar samples on freshly baked rolls. “Fine-dining restaurants and home cooking enthusiasts use these craft vinegar to add uniqueness and flavour to their meals,” concluded Rhys.

Exploring Arts and Culture
Beyond the wineries, The County’s vibrant arts scene beckoned us. Vivid and intricate painted Barn Quilts adorned the landscape, each a narrative in colour and pattern celebrating the region’s cultural tapestry. Driving from one quilt to another, we felt the heartbeat of the community at every turn on the road. We cataloged over 60 different designs as we explored the county’s heart.

Evenings were a time of connection and culinary delight. We gathered with fellow campers, sharing the stories we had heard and savouring farm-to-table dishes showcasing the region’s culinary diversity.
